Commonwealth Games Trials

Posted 24th April 2014

The British Gas Meet (Commonwealth Games Trials) and Para-swimming Internationals took place back to back in Glasgow during April which meant a long couple of weeks for a few swimmers (and coaches!) who made the journey north. Qualifying times for these events were set high so it was a great achievement even to qualify. WMDSS had several swimmers taking part - Megan Richter, Keira Shepherd, Tully Kearney, Hasna Hakim, Fran O Connor, Claire Cashmore, Sasha Kindred and Megan Russ.

This was the first time Megan Russ has reached the qualifying times since being classified and although her training leading up to this event had been interrupted with illness, she performed well and gained a lot of experience from taking part. Hasna Hakim also found the competition hard with some strong swims from other contestants but she qualified for the 50m freestyle final and again put in a strong performance.

Keira Shepherd qualified for finals in 100m freestyle and 50m freestyle across both the British Gas championships and the Para-swimming Internationals, just missing out on the European qualifying times. This was Keira's first experience at this level of competition and she achieved PB times at every performance - getting closer and closer to those European qualifying times. This is now her main aim and hopefully she will achieve this in forthcoming competitions. Claire Cashmore and Sasha Kindred both qualified for the European Champiobships.

Tully was plagued by illness, which affected her performance, but she still gained places in the finals and has now flown to the German Open Championships in Berlin to compete there along with Megan Richter.

Megan Richter also qualified for several finals and gave an outstanding performance throughout the competition. Megan achieved her highest ever points score so she was pleased with her overall performance and hopes to continue this through to Berlin.

DSE Juniors - Sheffield March 2014

Posted 24th April 2014

This is the last year that this annual event is being run, so we took a strong squad of competitors from Orion including Megan Richter, Scott Hadley, Megan Russ, who joined other WMDSS and guest swimmers to become a large regional contender.

Everyone who took part achieved at least one new pb time and several came home with medals.

Scott Hadley clocked up new PBs in just about every event he competed in and he achieved medals in events that he hadn't ever succeeded in before.

Megan Russ competed for the first time in this event and gained qualifying times for Internationals in the 50m freestyle event.

Megan Richter competed and brought home several medals, sharing her experiences with some of the younger and less experienced swimmers.

The meet was highly successful and will be missed in the future.
